NORTHSTAR AND SIERRA-AT-TAHOE ATHLETES REPRESENT LAKE TAHOE IN PURSUIT OF GOLD AT THE 2006 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Sierra and Northstar-at-Tahoe are proud to announce that two of its athletes were named to the 2006 United States Olympic Team and they will join world class athletes from around the world to go for the gold at the Winter Games Feb. 10-26, 2006 in Torino, Italy.
Travis Cabral
Sierra-at-Tahoe athlete Travis Cabral, 22, was one of 14 U.S. Ski Team athletes nominated to the Olympic Freestyle Team, following a successful World Cup competition season which placed him in the top five in three separate events.
After watching the freestyle moguls competition premier in the Albertville Olympics in 1992, Cabral told his father he wanted to win an Olympic Gold Medal and that’s exactly what he plans to do this winter in Torino. Already the youngest U.S. moguls gold medalist in history, this 2003 World Cup Champion and U.S. Freestyle Championship gold medal winner had a terrific season in 2004 by winning back-to-back championships at the Chevrolet U.S. Freestyle Championships. Cabral finished the 2005 season ranked sixth in moguls in the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) standings and had three top five finishes in the 2005 season.
Bill Marolt, president and CEO of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, the national governing body for Olympic skiing and snowboarding, said the U.S. Ski Team will include eight men and six women. Seven of the athletes have been to previous Olympics. The Ski Team was announced today at Deer Valley resort, the 2002 Olympic freestyle venue and host of the 2003 World Freestyle Ski Championships. All Olympic nominations submitted by the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding are subject to the approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Andy Finch
On the other side of the lake, Andy Finch will represent Northstar-at-Tahoe as one of 16 athletes selected to the U.S. Snowboard Olympic Team. He clinched the Olympic team spot with second-place finishes in Mountain Creek, N.J., last Friday and Sunday in the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix qualifier.
Finch, 24, a resident of Truckee, Calif. has an impressive resume that includes the following recent accomplishments: Overall U.S. Grand Prix Halfpipe Title in 2003 and 2004, taking first place in the prestigious Arctic Challenge in Norway in April 2004, winning the Vans Triple Crown in February 2004, and the O’Neill Snowboard Jam in January 2005. Andy took second place in Northstar’s own Vans Tahoe Cup last February, bringing home $12,000 in the Superpipe finals.
Finch will represent Lake Tahoe in halfpipe at his first Olympic competition. He is headed to Aspen, Colo. this week to compete in the Winter X Games before heading to Torino in early February for a pre-Olympic training camp.
Hannah Teter
Recent transplant to South Lake Tahoe, Hannah Teter will represent the ladies on the U.S. Olympic Snowboard Team where she will compete in halfpipe. Though not officially on Sierra's team, Teter spends her off time training at Sierra-at-Tahoe with her brothers Abe and Elijah when she is not on the competition circuit.
