Both Resorts Actively Participate in NSAA’s National Safety Awareness Week
TRUCKEE and SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Jan. 13, 2007 – Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will each host a myriad of safety related activities for guests to participate in during NSAA’s National Safety Awareness Week, Jan. 13-19. Both resorts are committed to the safety of skiers and riders, and to ensuring that guests are educated about and aware of the responsibility and smart style safety codes, and how to be safe on the mountain when participating in snow sports.
Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will host NSAA Safety Week activities for the whole family, including contests, demonstrations, and clinics designed to introduce different forms of mountain safety to skiers and riders. Activities including a poster contest for kids ages 4-12 will introduce children to mountain safety.
All ages are welcome to participate in Avalanche Awareness Day on Jan. 17. Sierra™ Resort’s ski patrollers will explain basic snow study analysis and act out avalanche rescue scenarios with patrollers and an avalanche dog. Transceiver demonstrations and training will also be included in this clinic. Interested participants should meet at the bottom of the Rock Garden chairlift at 10 a.m.
In an effort to educate local students about snow safety, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will host a private avalanche training demonstration, snow measurement, poster contest and tubing for the third and fourth grade students attending the local Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in South Lake Tahoe on Jan. 18.
Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort’s terrain park crew will also host park safety clinics in the resort’s new Burton Progression Park. Clinics will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 13 and Jan. 15, with the terrain park crew explaining Smart Style and giving tips to skiers and riders on how to ski or ride Sierra Resort’s parks.
Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort will host daily activities during safety week, including geocaching treasure hunts that will take place around the mountain with the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. Complimentary geocaching coordinate maps will be available at The North Face retail store in the Village at Northstar™ throughout the week. Those who locate all seven points on the mountain will receive a complimentary ice skate rental coupon valid for use at Northstar™ Resort’s 9,000 square foot ice rink.
Other activities include the distribution of complimentary hot cocoa and water bottles at Northstar Resort’s safety tent, located on Main Street at mid-mountain, daily raffles taking place at 3 p.m., visits to the mountain by Captain Safety and the Safety Squad, and poster contests for kids ages 5-12. Each poster entry will receive a complimentary child lift ticket (one entry per child).
In addition to these activities, Northstar Resort has also introduced “Mellow Yellow Zones” this year, consisting of additional signage around the mountain that reminds skiers and riders to slow down and ski or ride safely. These areas are often designated in areas where beginners are learning, trails merge, or are high traffic areas. In these zones, Northstar Resort’s Safety Squad will be posted with radar guns to monitor the speed of skiers and riders, and to remind and educate them on the importance of safety on the mountain and skiing or riding in control.
Both resorts will also offer discounts on helmets and other select safety equipment. For more information about National Safety Awareness Week activities at either resort, please visit NorthstarAtTahoe.com or SierraAtTahoe.com.
